All About Fetus as a Patient Institute, Philippines

The Fetus as a Patient Institute, Philippines (FPIP) is a non- government organization, composed of a group of medical specialists, scientists, nurses and midwives concerned with the promotion of perinatal health. This multidisciplinary team of experts include obstetricians, pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists, internists (like nephrologists), cardiologists, pulmonologists, hematologists and perinatal pathologists.

The objective of the FPIP is the promotion of perinatal health through maternal health and this is achieved by:

  1. Improving maternal and neonatal health services through network hospitals.
  2. Disseminating information and training of medical and paramedical personnel by conducting and sponsoring conventions, scientific meetings and seminars.
  3. Acting as the central coordinating body in generating funds and providing resource persons in research work in perinatology.

The information-dissemination program of the organization helps specialists in related fields become cognizant of danger signals pointing to possible catastrophe unless attended to.

Early recognition of the high risk situation hopefully could result in the application of appropriate medical measure that could lead to safe delivery of an endangered Child.

By training their own medical and paramedical personnel, FPIP is able to disseminate information to the concerned public. Those born too soon, born too small, or born too late to mothers who are sick, need not die. They need not be impaired or disabled. That is, there are those who care, who know and share and who are able to work hand in hand with others to bring our their precious child into the world.

To date FPIP has offered 18 postgraduate courses starting with the first postgraduate course “Fetus as a Patient” June 30 to July 2, 1988 in Quezon City during the inauguration of the first perinatal center in a children’s hospital (Philippine Children’s Medical Center). This was the first collaboration with the Fetus as a Patient International Society (FAPIS) and annually after.

FPIP has been conducting annual research contests ever since the first Erich Saling Award was established in November 1992. Other prestigious awards include Enrique M. Ostrea Jr, Ernst Rippmann, Norma Gaffud, Jose Baens, Rosalinda Arceo, Jose Fernando, Franklin Atencio, Herminia Baja Panlilio, Leonardo Leonidas and Mead Johnson Awards.
